Renowned Operatic Tenor Tshombe Selby to Perform at Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Juanita Pond Chamber Series

Jan 31, 2025 by Staff Reports

Â鶹ÊÓƵ is honored to welcome Tshombe Selby, an acclaimed operatic tenor, for a special performance as part of the Juanita Pond Chamber Series on Sunday, February 16, at 3:00 PM in the Chowan Chapel. This free and open-to-the-public event promises an unforgettable afternoon of world-class vocal artistry, featuring well-known opera arias and cherished traditional favorites.

Selby will be joined by pianist Julius Abrahams, an esteemed collaborator known for his expertise in opera and vocal performance coaching. After completing his graduate studies at The Juilliard School, Abrahams continues to serve as a staff pianist at Juilliard’s Vocal Arts Institute and Orchestral Department. He has worked as a vocal coach with Classical Singing in New York, Bel Canto at Caramoor, Teatro Nuovo, and Chautauqua Opera Conservatory, where he also served as music director for numerous operas. His collaboration with Selby promises to bring an exceptional depth of musicality and artistry to this performance.

Originally from Manteo, North Carolina, Selby has captivated audiences worldwide with his powerful tenor voice and dynamic stage presence. For the past decade, he has performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, where he has been an integral part of award-winning productions, including Porgy and Bess, Fire Shut Up in My Bones, and Champion.

Selby’s journey from ushering at the Metropolitan Opera to singing on its prestigious stage is a testament to his unwavering dedication and extraordinary talent. His career highlights include a Carnegie Hall debut in 2015, participation in the Opera Nuova festival in Canada, and performances with the presidential orchestra of Ukraine.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ is thrilled to host such an esteemed artist, offering students, faculty, and the surrounding community an opportunity to experience an afternoon of remarkable vocal artistry and cultural enrichment.
