Summer at Â鶹ÊÓƵ: A Season of Growth, Faith, Leadership, and Discovery

Jun 12, 2026 by Staff Reports

Each summer, the campus of Â鶹ÊÓƵ comes alive in a different way. While many people associate summer with a quieter season on college campuses, at Chowan it is often one of the most vibrant and impactful times of the year.

Throughout the summer months, our campus welcomes thousands of students, churches, educators, coaches, and community leaders from across North Carolina and beyond. They arrive for faith-based youth camps, leadership experiences, athletic camps, and educational enrichment programs. While these experiences vary in purpose, they all share something important in common: they provide opportunities for growth, discovery, and transformation.

At Â鶹ÊÓƵ, we believe education extends far beyond the classroom. As a Christian university founded on faith, service, and academic excellence, our mission is to develop the whole person. Summer programs allow us to fulfill that mission by creating experiences that help young people grow intellectually, spiritually, physically, and socially.

Faith-based camps are among the most meaningful programs hosted at Chowan each summer. Lifeway Camps continue to be a significant part of the University’s summer conference season, bringing thousands of campers, leaders, and volunteers to campus each year. Through CentriKid Camps, Student Life Camp, and FUGE Camps, young people from across the region gather at Chowan for experiences centered on faith, worship, discipleship, and community.

While each camp offers a unique approach to spiritual growth, all three share a common mission of helping students deepen their relationship with Christ, build lasting friendships, and create meaningful memories in a Christ-centered environment. These programs not only impact the lives of participants but also contribute to the vibrant summer atmosphere that makes Â鶹ÊÓƵ a destination for faith-based youth experiences.

This summer, Liberty Students Camp also brings middle and high school students to Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s campus for a week focused on faith, fellowship, and personal growth. Through dynamic worship experiences, engaging messages, team competitions, and small-group discussions, students are encouraged to deepen their relationship with Christ while building meaningful connections with their peers. By creating space away from everyday distractions, Liberty Students Camp provides an environment where young people strengthen their faith, develop lasting friendships, and experience life-changing moments that continue to impact them long after camp concludes.

These programs provide more than recreation or entertainment. They create opportunities for students to deepen their faith, build meaningful relationships, and experience a supportive environment where faith and learning work hand in hand.

Leadership development is another important component of Chowan’s summer programming. This year marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter as Â鶹ÊÓƵ serves as the host campus for Tar Heel Boys State through a multi-year partnership.

One of the most respected citizenship and public service programs in the state, Tar Heel Boys State is sponsored by the American Legion Department of North Carolina. Through hands-on participation in simulated city, county, and state governments, delegates gain a deeper understanding of government, public service, and civic responsibility while learning the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of engaged citizens.

Operated by the students themselves, the program features elections, legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, distinguished guest speakers, and recreational activities. By combining leadership development with practical civic education, Tar Heel Boys State inspires participants to become informed, active, and responsible leaders in their communities.

As a Military Friendly institution, Chowan is especially honored to host a program that reflects our commitment to leadership, civic engagement, and service to others.

Athletic camps remain another cornerstone of summer at Â鶹ÊÓƵ. Throughout the season, the University welcomes aspiring athletes to campus for camps and prospect events in football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball, and other sports.

Among those opportunities is the Hawks Soccer Academy, which serves elementary and middle school students. Participants train with former professional players and current collegiate student-athletes while developing their technical skills, teamwork, confidence, and love for the game in a supportive and encouraging environment.

These camps provide instruction from experienced coaches, skill development opportunities, competitive experiences, and exposure to the expectations of collegiate athletics. Beyond improving athletic performance, participants learn valuable lessons in teamwork, discipline, leadership, and perseverance.

For many young athletes, their time at Chowan represents an opportunity to challenge themselves, develop their talents, and experience the environment of a collegiate campus while building confidence both on and off the field.

What makes summer at Chowan unique is the diversity of experiences taking place across campus. On any given day, visitors can find elementary students participating in faith-based activities, middle and high school students developing leadership skills, athletes training with collegiate coaches, and community organizations gathering for camps, conferences, and enrichment experiences.

Each program brings its own goals and traditions, but together they create an environment filled with energy, learning, fellowship, and personal growth. Residence halls, classrooms, athletic facilities, dining spaces, and gathering areas become places where relationships are formed, confidence is built, and lives are impacted.

For many participants, a summer camp or conference at Chowan is more than a week away from home. It is an opportunity to discover new interests, strengthen existing talents, deepen faith, develop leadership skills, and create memories that last a lifetime.

What sets Chowan apart is its commitment to creating experiences that nurture every aspect of a participant’s development. Whether someone visits campus for a week or returns year after year, the goal remains the same: to provide an environment where growth, learning, and meaningful connections can flourish.

At Â鶹ÊÓƵ, summer is more than a season. It is a time when lives are impacted, friendships are formed, faith is strengthened, and future leaders are inspired.

The relationships built, lessons learned, and memories created through these camps and conferences often extend far beyond a single week. They strengthen communities, encourage personal growth, deepen faith, and help young people discover new possibilities for their future.

Organizations interested in hosting a camp or conference at Â鶹ÊÓƵ are encouraged to contact campsandconferences@chowan.edu to learn more about the opportunities available on campus.

As another summer unfolds, Â鶹ÊÓƵ remains proud to serve as a place where campers, students, leaders, and families come together to learn, grow, and create experiences that will last a lifetime.
