Hawks Men’s Basketball Throttles Bruins In Opener

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team shot 54.4% from the floor to win big against Piedmont International in their home opener on Saturday afternoon, 92-47.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

 led the Hawks with a career-high 22 points knocking down three triples.  Hus Rowland and  notched double-figures with 15 points and 14 points respectively.  Sanders chipped in with seven boards.

 missed a double-double with nine points and a career-high 13 rebounds.  Buckhanon notched three blocks in the win.

 and  chipped in with eight points each.

The Hawks defense held the Bruins to 26.5% from the floor including 14.3% in the second half limiting the visitors to 16 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

The Hawks jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage grabbing a layup from  and a dunk by Demetrius Sanders.

The Bruins and Hawks traded points for the first five minutes of the contest forcing a timeout with CU trailing 13-12.

Out of the timeout, Chowan went on an 8-0 run to regain the lead and never look back.  Tim Hewett sparked the run with a triple followed by a three by Robert Grubbs and a tip-in by Grubbs to give the Hawks a 20-13 advantage.

Gus Rowland brought the crowd to their feet midway through the half converting the old-fashioned three point play on a fastbreak.  Tim Hewett put the Hawks up double-digits with a layup, 33-22 with 7:10 remaining.

Both teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half until Tim Hewett knocked down a corner trey and completed the four-point play with under a minute to play.

The Hawks went into the locker room with a 43-31 advantage.

Second Half:

Trevis Buckhanon opened the half with a three-point play just 30 seconds into the half.

The Bruins notched a layup at the 16:57 mark of the half and connect on one shot over the next five minutes of action as the Hawks' lead swelled to 22, 64-42, during the spurt.  Gus Rowland sparked the rally with a fastbreak layup.  Demetrius Sanders and Tim Hewett grabbed a bucket each.

Following the Bruins' field goal at the 11:57 mark the Hawks defense would not allow another basket finishing the half on a 28-3 run.  Robert Grubbs drained a three to spark another rally for the Hawks.  The Bruins' three points came from the charity stripe.

 tacked on five points during a small scoring stretch grabbing a three-point play and knocking down a pair of freebies.

 scored all six of his points in the final five minutes of the contest as head coach Brett Vincentemptied his bench.

UP NEXT

Chowan continues their home stretch to open the season as the Hawks face the Apprentice School on Wednesday, November 15.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
