Â鶹ÊÓƵ Professors Honored for Community Involvement

Mar 31, 2017 by Staff Reports

MURFREESBORO, NC – Academic Affairs celebrated the spirit of service by honoring Carolyn Modlin, Professor of Education, and Lewis Nicholson, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice, with the Faculty Excellence in Community Service Award on Tuesday, March 14.

Dr. Danny Moore, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs commented, “Dr. Modlin, and Professor Lewis, and the other finalists are the types of people that Theodore Roosevelt had in mind when he implored an audience to ‘do what you can, with what you have, where you are.’ They have brought those words to light—day in and day out. They have been a catalyst for action, affecting change on campus and improving the quality of life in our local communities.”

Dr. Modlin was recognized for her involvement in the community, to include:

Member, Southampton County School Board

Member, Boykins Town Council

Trustee, Boykins United Methodist Church

Head of Nursery, Boykins United Methodist Church

Tutoring/Reading, Southampton County Elementary Schools

Professor Nicholson’s community involvement includes:

Member, Franklin Black Male Initiative Steering Committee

Member, Halifax Community College Criminal Justice Advisory Board

Member, Hope Focus Board of Directors

Bible Study Teacher and Curriculum Planner, Eternal Life Church

Mentor, Kappa Alpha Psi Beautification

Workshop Leader, Alpha Kappa Alpha Mentorship Program

Modlin and Nicolson were two of five finalists for the 2016-2017 award. The other finalist were:

Thomas Collins, Professor of Sport Management

Please join us in congratulating two pillars of our Chowan and wider communities.
