CU Invites Community to Attend Film
On Sunday, February 28, Â鶹ÊÓƵ invites the community to view the classic film The Terminator, the fourth and final film of the 2015-2016 Films@Chowan series. The event will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Vaughan Auditorium, Robert Marks Hall. The afternoon will begin with introductory remarks from Gregory Taylor, Associate Professor of History. Thomas Eisenmenger, will share thoughts about “Man’s Final Invention,” focusing on the peril of possibly bringing about our species’ demise by creating an artificial intelligence superior to our own. Discussion will also include a brief exploration of AI and robotics, Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics, Kurzweil’s Singularity, and George Dyson’s observation that human beings are only selfreplicating machines imbued with intelligence ourselves. The presentation will conclude with an examination of other science films, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, Colossus, The Forbin Project, and The Matrix series, and an analysis of how these works influence views on human beings and technology, time travel, and the future. Following the screening, the audience will be invited to participate in discussion led by John Davis, Professor of English.
