聽enters his first year as the newly appointed Compliance Officer for 麻豆视频 Athletics, where he will serve as the department’s newest administrative hire.聽

“Gabe’s a great addition to our staff,” stated Rob Burke, Chowan’s Director of Athletics and Men’s Basketball Coach. “The ability to hire from our alumni base speaks volumes about the type of workplace culture that we are establishing within our department and the campus community. It’s a true compliment to what we are doing here under Dr. Thomas’ leadership that graduates want to stay on as employees.”

A native of Gloucester, Virginia, Espiritu first arrived at Chowan in 2022 as a member of the Hawks baseball program and quickly established himself as a leader both on campus and within the university community.

During his time as a student he became heavily involved across campus, earning induction into Alpha Lambda Delta, the honor society for first-year students, Alpha Chi, which recognizes upperclassmen for excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, and character, and Chi Alpha Sigma, the national student-athlete honor society.

In addition to his academic achievements, Espiritu served as a ministry chaplain and worship leader for campus ministry. He became a presidential ambassador, appointed the vice president of the Honors College during his senior year, and was a member of the Rotaract Club. Further, Espiritu was a consistent name on the Dean’s and President’s Lists every semester and closed out his collegiate career being selected as a Commencement Marshal as a junior, before later being chosen as one of the university’s Commencement speakers for graduation his senior year.

Graduating in May 2026 with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation, Wellness, and Sport, Espiritu earned Summa Cum Laude honors and was recognized as an Outstanding Student for the 2025-26 school year.

As a senior Espiritu served as an intern within the athletic department, gaining valuable hands-on experience in event operations, athletic communications, and compliance. His diverse background in athletics, academics, and campus leadership has positioned him for a seamless transition into a full-time role within the department.

“At the end of the day, it’s about the people we work with and the relationships we build,” said , Deputy Director of Athletics. “Gabe already bleeds Chowan blue and is well connected all over campus and within our community. We saw monumental growth in Gabe from his freshman year through his four years as a student-athlete, student leader, and campus leader . We can’t wait to see that growth continue on this side of the operation.”

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Conference Carolinas named Chowan football’s Courtney Massingill the 2025-26 Comeback Athlete of the Year, presented by Vernon Graphics & Promotions.

During May 2024 Massingill and his brother were hit by a drunk driver at home in Texas where he suffered significant trauma and was airlifted from the scene. He was in a medically induced coma for two weeks while undergoing repairs for a broken left femur, tibia and fibula with metal rods inserted in all areas. Massingill also sustained an axonal brain injury, kidney contusion, lacerated liver and an injury to his transverse colon.

Overall, Massingill spent about six weeks in the hospital and further time in a rehab facility before returning home. His return to campus for the fall of 2024 was delayed by a few weeks, and when he returned to campus and was watching his teammates practice from the sidelines, he was tackled causing a re-break in his left tibia and fibula and significantly bent the rod in his lower leg. He then had to undergo another long surgery to have a new rod placed in his lower leg to recover.

During these setbacks, his faith and positive spirit kept him and everyone else around him going strong. He never felt sorry for himself and knew that this was God’s plan for him. He continued to work hard through rehab and was able to start rejoining workouts in the Spring of 2025 on a limited basis. Massingill was cleared to participate by the surgeons in the fall for the 2025 season and returned to the field to play out his senior season.

Massingill is not only an inspiration and leader on the field but across our campus. His spirit and faith are felt by all who are blessed to know Courtney Massingill. He finished his undergraduate degree in December of 2024 in business administration and recently graduated with his Master’s of Arts in Organizational Leadership on May 10.

The Comeback Athlete of the Year award recognizes a student-athlete who participates in a conference-sponsored sport, suffers a significant injury and comes back to make significant contributions to their team after recovering. The award is presented annually.

The head athletic trainer from each Conference Carolinas member institution submits one nominee each based on the award criteria. The head athletic trainers then select the winner.

CONCORD, N.C. 鈥 More than 30 female leaders representing all levels of leadership from Conference Carolinas’ 16 member institutions gathered Wednesday morning to hear from Rosemary M. Thomas, president of 麻豆视频. Thomas served as the keynote speaker for the annual Conference Carolinas EmpowHER Breakfast Seminar for female leaders.

Following introductions from around the room, Thomas opened the session with a parable centered around a simple towel. She gifted each attendee a towel accompanied by a note explaining its deeper meaning for those working in higher education 鈥 particularly in college athletics.

A towel may wipe sweat from the floor or comfort a teammate after their final game. It may blot perspiration from a brow or serve as a tourniquet in a moment of injury. Though simple in appearance, Thomas explained, the towel symbolizes service, compassion, and support.

“It’s not just a simple towel; it’s the humble purpose the towel serves that matters most,” said Thomas.

The EmpowHER Breakfast brought together a wide range of conference administrators, including Senior Woman Administrators, university presidents, conference office staff, Faculty Athletic Representatives, Deputy Athletic Directors, and Athletic Directors from across the league’s 16 campuses.

Thomas later guided the group into roundtable discussions using a quote from the poet Rumi: “Be a lamp, or a lifeboat, or a ladder.”

She encouraged attendees to change one word in the quote to better reflect the realities of women in leadership.

“As women, we can change one word in this quote,” Thomas said. “Change the ‘or’ to ‘and,’ because oftentimes we are all three things at the same time. Be a lamp, and a lifeboat, and a ladder.”

One by one, female leaders shared examples of how they serve their campus communities in each of those roles.

One story that emerged from the discussion centered on how Ferrum College served as a lifeboat for Lees-McRae College following the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene in 2024. Ferrum opened its campus to Lees-McRae student-athletes and coaches after the storm caused catastrophic damage throughout Banner Elk.

Ferrum President Mirta M. Martin said the university felt honored to host Lees-McRae student-athletes during the difficult time.

“What mattered most was that the student-athletes, coaches and administrators built friendships before they ever became competitors. That is the beauty of athletics and of Conference Carolinas- we can compete fiercely on the field and still care deeply for one another beyond it. The bonds created during Lees-McRae College’s time on our campus remain strong today, a lasting reminder that shared experiences and genuine human connection are far greater than any scoreboard,” shared Martin.

Martin and Thomas, the league’s two female presidents, created a powerful moment for every female leader in attendance simply by being in the same room together.

The morning ultimately served as a reminder of the importance of mentorship, collaboration, and representation within collegiate athletics. As the seminar concluded, attendees left not only with a towel in hand, but with a renewed sense of purpose and connection 鈥 encouraged to continue serving as lamps, lifeboats, and ladders for the next generation of women leaders across Conference Carolinas.

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – 麻豆视频 President, Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas, announced on March 26th the hiring of Rob Burke as the university’s next Director of Athletics. Burke will become the school’s 11th Director of Athletics since transitioning to a four-year institution and 4th in the school’s D2 history.

President Thomas shared that, “Rob Burke brings a proven record of leadership, integrity, and deep commitment to student-athlete success to this role. We are confident his vision and energy will elevate Chowan Athletics and strengthen our culture of excellence both on and off the fields of play.”

Burke will maintain his position as Head Men’s Basketball Coach while also serving in the role as Director of Athletics. Burke brings with him 26 years of coaching experience at all levels of basketball, giving him invaluable experience that will assist him in his new journey as Director of Athletics.

“I am honored and especially thankful for this opportunity to impact 麻豆视频 in a different light,” said Burke. “I understand the leaders that have come before me and I am humbled to take on the challenges in this collegiate environment.”

Burke, a 1999 Chowan graduate, returns home, this time on the sidelines.  Burke played for his father, legendary Chowan head coach Bob Burke, from 1995-1999, where he ranks in the top-10 in Chowan’s Division III program history in three point field goals made, assists, and points.

“Chowan is unique in how we impact student athletes,” continued Burke. “This university impacted my entire 25-year career in so many different ways. I hope to take on the challenge of the new age student-athlete in helping them have the same type of experience that I had as a student-athlete here.”

“I am excited to lead our team of coaches and to continue the building process of each program here at Chowan. I know this will be a major task but with the guidance and expertise of our Deputy Athletic Director  and the remaining athletic administrative staff, I know we can continue to meet the needs of our student athletes”.

“Rob and I have known one another since we were 18 years old when we were student-athletes ourselves here at Chowan,” said , Deputy Athletic Director. “Rob brings energy and enthusiasm to our department and experiences on a lot of other college campuses that will help us as we nurture and continue to grow our department in the coming years. This transition will be as smooth as it can be because we have an excellent support staff, starting at the top with our President, Dr. Thomas,  and trickling down into each department on this campus.”

Prior to coming back to Chowan, Burke was the assistant men’s basketball coach at Division III Colorado College for one season under Coach Conarroe.

Burke spent four seasons at UNC Wilmington climbing the ranks within the program starting as the director of basketball operations in 2017 before being promoted to assistant coach during the 2018-19 campaign, and later served as the interim head coach for the latter half of the 2019-20 season.  Burke would go 5-8 as the interim while helping Shykeim Phillips to an All-CAA Rookie Team selection.

Prior to arriving in Wilmington, Burke served as the director of basketball operations at Georgia Southern for two seasons.

Before moving up the ranks in the Division I level, Burke spent six seasons (2004-10) at NJCAA Spartanburg Methodist, where he guided the Pioneers to a 112-67 overall record, averaging 19 wins a season.  Burke was named Region X Coach of the Year in 2008-09 and sent 32 players to Division I and II.

Burke spent the 2008 summer as a pro staff skill development trainer for the Nike Regional Skills Academy.

Prior to becoming a head coach, Burke spent two seasons at Campbell (2002-04) as an assistant coach and two seasons at Limestone (2000-02).

Burke was a four-year member of the then-Chowan College, where he ranks in the top-10 in program history in made three-point field goals and in assists.  Burke graduated from Chowan in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management and a minor in Business Administration.

From the first moment Lucas Pels stepped onto 麻豆视频鈥檚 campus, it was clear he would leave an impression. Sometimes that impression came poolside, sometimes in the classroom, and sometimes鈥攗nforgettably鈥攊n a romper while energizing the student section at a volleyball game.

鈥淗e stood out immediately,鈥 said Shannon Williams, associate professor of accounting. 鈥淗e was the life of the student section. It was obvious he had a great sense of humor鈥攕omething that helped him connect with people in every setting.鈥

That ability to balance joy with responsibility became a defining characteristic of Pels鈥 time at Chowan. As a student-athlete, he was known not only for his work ethic in the pool, but for his attentiveness in class and his genuine investment in learning.

鈥淚n class, Lucas was always very attentive and willing to put in the work,鈥 Williams said. 鈥淚 was especially impressed by his eagerness to connect coursework to the real world, particularly in his senior capstone project.鈥

But Lucas鈥檚 impact extended far beyond academics. When Williams recruited him to help with a community Reading Fest, his leadership immediately surfaced.

鈥淗e encouraged his teammates and friends to help with posters and games to engage the kids,鈥 she recalled. 鈥淗is excitement was contagious鈥攁nd the kids absolutely loved him.鈥

That blend of leadership, enthusiasm, and care for others followed Lucas long after graduation鈥攁nd ultimately led him back to where it all began.

A Full-Circle Return

Returning to Chowan as head swim coach marked a new chapter for Pels鈥攐ne that felt both surreal and familiar.

鈥淐oming back to Chowan as a coach almost felt like I never left,鈥 Pels said. 鈥淗aving already had the Chowan experience as a student-athlete made it easy to get things going with the team right away.鈥

Practice began his very first day back on campus, a reflection of both the program鈥檚 readiness and Pels鈥 hands-on leadership style.

For Lucas, returning wasn鈥檛 simply a career move鈥攊t was the fulfillment of a dream he had carried since his sophomore year.

鈥淚 already knew I wanted to coach,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nd I wanted to give other athletes the same opportunity I had here. There鈥檚 something special about Chowan鈥擨 swear there鈥檚 something in the water.鈥

Learning How to Lead

Lucas credits his time as a Chowan swimmer鈥攁nd the variety of coaching styles he experienced鈥攚ith shaping his approach today.

鈥淪wimming has changed a lot over the past decade,鈥 he explained. 鈥淪ome things that were normal when I was younger aren鈥檛 best practice anymore. Being at Chowan taught me how I wanted to coach鈥攁nd how I didn鈥檛.鈥

After graduating, Pels returned to his home state of Florida and worked with Planet Swim Club in Ponte Vedra, gaining experience in one of the nation鈥檚 most competitive swimming environments. There, he learned that long-term success is driven by culture as much as talent.

That preparation proved critical in 2023, when Pels served as acting head coach for Chowan鈥檚 men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 teams during a mid-season transition. Leading the Hawks at the Conference Carolinas Swim Championship in Tennessee, he guided the teams to multiple podium finishes across both the men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 events, demonstrating resilience, unity, and belief under pressure.

Building More Than a Team

While competitive success matters, Pels is quick to emphasize that his vision extends far beyond results.

鈥淢y biggest goal is to create a healthy environment,鈥 he said. 鈥淥ne where athletes work hard, support each other, and enjoy the process.鈥

Williams sees that philosophy as an extension of who Lucas has always been.

鈥淗e always balanced work with play,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 think Lucas found a little bit of fun in everything he did鈥攚hether in class, in the pool, or around campus.鈥

That joy, paired with discipline, is what Pels hopes his athletes carry with them beyond Chowan.

鈥淚 want them to love what they do鈥攏ot just swimming, but life,鈥 he said. 鈥淭o care about others, to get back up when they鈥檙e knocked down, and to help lift others up too.鈥

Confidence from Leadership

Chowan Athletics leadership shares that confidence in Pels鈥 vision and ability.

鈥淲e feel fortunate to have Lucas join the staff officially,鈥 said Patrick Mashuda, Associate Vice President for Athletics and Compliance. 鈥淟ucas has a ton of talent as a young coach, and his enthusiasm for the sport is off the charts. I can鈥檛 wait to see what Lucas can do with the program that he helped to build as a former CU Hawk swimmer.鈥

Still Becoming

For Pels, coaching has never been about titles, recognition, or legacy.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 coach because of money or career building,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 coach because I love seeing people succeed through hard work and adversity.鈥

As Chowan swimming moves forward, Lucas Pels stands at the helm not just as a coach, but as a mentor shaped by the same classrooms, community, and culture he now leads.

And in true Lucas fashion, he鈥檚 doing it with heart, humility鈥攁nd just enough fun to make the hard work worthwhile.

Women鈥檚 flag football is no longer just an emerging sport 鈥 it鈥檚 a movement gaining national momentum. With growing participation at the high school and collegiate levels and increased support from the NFL, the sport is carving out a powerful future in athletics.

Across the country, states are sanctioning girls鈥 flag football at the high school level at a rapid pace. Participation numbers continue to climb, opening doors for female athletes who want to compete in football while developing leadership, teamwork, and strategic skills. What was once seen primarily as a recreational activity is now becoming a competitive pathway with real scholarship and collegiate opportunities.

The NFL鈥檚 Investment in Growth

The NFL has played a significant role in accelerating the growth of women鈥檚 flag football. Through partnerships with schools, community programs, and athletic organizations, the league has helped expand access, visibility, and legitimacy for the sport. Flag football鈥檚 inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games has further fueled excitement and long-term investment in its development.

This national attention is creating a clear pipeline: from youth leagues to high school programs, and now increasingly to collegiate competition.

麻豆视频鈥檚 Role in the Momentum

麻豆视频 is proud to be part of this growing movement. As one of the institutions recognizing the potential and opportunity within women鈥檚 flag football, Chowan鈥檚 program reflects the University鈥檚 commitment to innovation in athletics and expanding opportunities for female student-athletes.

The program provides athletes with a competitive environment, strong coaching, and the support systems needed to succeed both on the field and in the classroom. As the sport continues to gain recognition nationwide, Chowan is positioning itself at the forefront 鈥 offering student-athletes the chance to be pioneers in a rapidly expanding collegiate sport.

A Sport with a Promising Future

Women鈥檚 flag football represents more than just competition. It embodies growth, equity, and opportunity. As support from organizations like the NFL continues and more colleges add programs, the future looks bright for the next generation of athletes ready to make their mark.

At Chowan, that future is already in motion.

MURFREESBORO, N.C. 鈥 On what began as an ordinary afternoon at 麻豆视频, Deputy Athletic Director Meredith Long found herself at the center of a moment that would test both courage and compassion.

From her office window in the Hawks Athletic Center, Long witnessed a devastating accident unfold just outside. Without hesitation, she rushed from her desk toward the scene, where a vehicle had crashed and caught fire. Inside was the driver鈥攊njured and unable to escape.

Without thinking twice, Long pulled the individual from the car and to safety just moments before the fire intensified. Her quick instincts and selfless actions made the difference between tragedy and survival. 麻豆视频 students Caroline (Madi) Webb, Sophia Roane, and Owen Williams, joined Long at the scene. Working together with Athletic Trainers Lisa Bland, Brenna Schuler, and Samantha Faulk, they administered aid until emergency responders arrived.

By the time the Murfreesboro Fire Department reached the scene, the driver was already receiving care. The department later commended their heroism, stating:

鈥淲hen crews arrived, they found the car on fire, and thanks to the quick actions of Chowan staff, the driver had already been pulled to safety. Their actions made a difference, and we are grateful to serve alongside community members who step up when it counts.鈥

For those who know Meredith Long, her bravery came as no surprise. Known for her leadership, deep faith, and unwavering care for others, Long has spent her career shaping student-athletes not only into competitors but into compassionate citizens.

鈥淢eredith鈥檚 actions reflect the heart of who we are as a university,鈥 said 麻豆视频 President Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas. 鈥淪he embodies servant leadership鈥攁cting with courage, humility, and love in the moments that matter most. Her quick thinking and compassion quite literally saved a life.鈥

In the days following the accident, the story has spread quickly through campus and the Murfreesboro community鈥攁 powerful reminder of how ordinary people can rise to extraordinary heights when faced with crisis.

For Long, though, it wasn鈥檛 about heroism. It was about doing what anyone would do. Her quiet strength and selflessness remind the Chowan family, and the broader community, that true leadership is not found only in titles or positions. It is found in the moments when someone chooses to act, to care, and to make a difference.
