“Chowan helped prepare me for my career in many ways. I majored in Criminal Justice and during my time in this program, I was able to obtain the skills I needed in the workplace through the intriguing course content and hands-on coursework opportunities, along with the support and guidance from my Chowan family. The close community and individualized learning that Chowan provides helped me to strengthen my interpersonal as well as intrapersonal skills and opened many doors for me in the Criminal Justice field upon graduation. Because of Chowan, I was able to begin my career as a Probation Officer and soon transitioned to a different area in the Justice System, where I now serve as Martin County’s Magistrate. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my time spent at Â鶹ÊÓƵ!”

“Working in Chicago addressing social issues and switching careers to teach started with the passion I found at Chowan.  Chowan prepared me for my career by providing me with opportunities to be a servant leader in the classroom and outside of the classroom. Being involved in various capacities of the university shaped my heart, perspective, and work ethic and challenged me in ways that contribute to my success today. It takes a certain place to shape the mind intellectually, develop good character, and ignite passion. Chowan was that for me. “

“As a marketing professional, I interact with people from all over the world on a weekly basis. My time at Â鶹ÊÓƵ helped me develop the perspective and versatility that I need to succeed in this role. At Chowan, I met people from different cultures and backgrounds, which gave me a broader understanding of the world. This helped me to develop the ability to see things from different perspectives, which is essential in marketing. I also gained hands-on experience in marketing and graphic design through my Interdisciplinary Studies major. This experience has given me the skills that I need to create effective marketing campaigns and design eye-catching graphics. In addition, I learned about accounting and business strategy at Chowan, which has helped me to understand the financial aspects of marketing. This knowledge is essential as I oversee various company budgets and make informed decisions. I am grateful for the education that I received at Chowan. It has prepared me well for my career in marketing and has given me the skills and knowledge that I need to succeed in this complex and globalized world.”

“The benefit of being a graduate student of Â鶹ÊÓƵ is that I was prepared for life once graduating. I learned the importance of networking, time management, and creative skills. Being a resident of a small town for four years at Chowan, you learn a lot. Chowan’s professors and staff knew me by name and not by number. This taught me how to communicate on an individual basis with my teachers and superiors and not be afraid to speak with them. Often times when you attend a larger institution, you are a number and not a name, unfortunately, students never have an opportunity to grow as an induvial. Having said that, upon my graduation, I left with great confidence, knowing I was prepared to communicate with all individuals, young and old. Their objective is to not only make sure the students graduate in 4 years but to make sure we leave out ready for the real world. Currently, as an Entrepreneur and Owner of a few businesses, I am reminded every day of how Chowan invested in my future. This is why I try on a daily basis to create jobs, help guide youth through my foundation, and to pour into their lives so they would someday have a prosperous future.”

Through my time on campus, I joined several student clubs where I held leadership positions, including the Honors College and the International Students Club. All helped me gain foundational skills that played vital roles in my success not only in my first job out of college but also in today’s workplace 10 years after graduation. Such skills are effective communication, project leading, delegation, decision-making, and teamwork.”
