鶹Ƶ recently concluded its annual Holy Week Revival — a four-day spiritual gathering filled with worship, powerful testimonies, and deep reflection. The campus came together to celebrate the Easter season, honoring Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection while encouraging each other in faith.

The revival opened with a moving worship service in Chowan Chapel, led by Interim Campus Minister Jason Fowler. Chowan alumnus Pastor Michael Moore returned to campus with a heartfelt message, praying, “I pray that this last night of campus revival is the beginning of something really special at Chowan—where students are unafraid and unashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ and bold in sharing His message with their peers.”

Preaching from Romans 10, Pastor Moore emphasized knowledge, conviction, and commitment as the heart of saving faith. Sharing his own testimony, he reminded students that no matter their background or struggles, God is able and willing to transform lives.

One of the most powerful moments of the week came when fifteen students publicly professed their faith through baptism. Before the baptisms, Jason Fowler led a prayer of gratitude, celebrating the students’ boldness and the transformative work happening in their hearts. Pastor Jill Awuni, affectionately known as “Mama Jill,” joined Pastor Fowler in baptizing the following students: Ariana Vizcaya, Desiree Cumbea-Hailey, Courtney Massingill, Kamari Matthews, Antwone Godley, Kris’Shyia McKoy, Jesmelly Lugo-Tirado, Jadyn Hammonds-Dickens, Teray Cherry, Jayden Andrews, Jaimire Rogers, Abigail Lugo-Tirado, Michael Litchfield, Sarai Sanders, and Janaya Perry.

Closing the service, President Dr. Rosemary Thomas offered words of encouragement: “We all have faith. We are part of a family that is unparalleled. And we are not afraid of the future, because we are walking into it together.”

At Chowan, the Holy Week Revival is more than a campus tradition — it is a sacred time when lives are changed, faith is renewed, and the love of Christ is boldly proclaimed.

The Chapel at 鶹Ƶ was filled with enthusiasm, heartfelt exchanges, and warm embraces as the Rouson family gathered for the annual Reverend George T. and Luvenia B. Rouson Memorial Lecture. Some traveled from outside North Carolina—including a father and son from Atlanta—making the event a true family reunion. The congregation overflowed, with many standing outside, a testament to the lasting impact of the Rouson legacy.

Established in 2003 as a collaboration between the Town of Murfreesboro, 鶹Ƶ, and the Murfreesboro Historical Association, the lecture honors individuals who make a meaningful impact on their community.

Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas, President of 鶹Ƶ, opened the service with Psalm 118:24:
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

She reflected on the values embodied by the Rouson family: faith, family, and future—faith guiding ministry, family fostering compassion, and the future ensuring education. She reminded attendees, “We are here to celebrate a legacy, share memories, and create new ones.”

Murfreesboro Mayor Hal Thomas introduced Mayor Pro Tem Berna L. Stephens, who presented awards to community members exemplifying the Rouson spirit.

Captain Derek A. Burke – Futrell/Ruffin Community Service Award

Captain Derek A. Burke, of the Murfreesboro Police Department, was recognized for his decades of service. A former Military Police Officer in the U.S. Air Force, he later worked in law enforcement with the Virginia Department of Corrections, Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, and 鶹Ƶ Campus Police.

Beyond his professional roles, Captain Burke made a lasting impact on the community, volunteering with the Murfreesboro Recreation Department and managing the youth basketball program. “Our league emphasized fundamentals, discipline, and sportsmanship, incorporating 鶹Ƶ’s men’s and women’s basketball teams to inspire young athletes,” he shared.

Brunet V. Parker – Minnie Wood Perkins Humanitarian Award

Recently retired after a 30-year career in education, Brunet V. Parker was honored for her dedication to youth empowerment. A graduate of multiple institutions, including 鶹Ƶ, Elizabeth City State University, and East Carolina University, she holds an MBA and is a Certified Professional Mentor.

In 2011, she received the Roanoke-Chowan News Herald Front Page Award for enriching students’ lives through Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), which she chartered at Hertford County Middle School. Her motto, “The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it,” continues to inspire.

Words of Wisdom: Choosing the Right Path

Linda Pierce, a Hertford County native and active First Baptist Church member, spoke about the importance of education and making wise choices. She quoted Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken,” emphasizing:

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”

She urged attendees to believe in themselves, seek wisdom, and choose friends wisely. Quoting George Carlin, she reminded the congregation, “We have learned how to make a living, but not a life. We have added years to life but not life to years.” She concluded with a powerful reflection: “The decisions we make control our destiny. What road will you take today?”

Continuing the Rouson Legacy

The Rouson family remains deeply connected to 鶹Ƶ—not just through their endowment but through their service in art, youth work, and business. Around 30 Rousens were in attendance celebrating their love for their heritage, each other, their community and Chowan. Reverend Willie Elliott, responsible for sharing information with Jill Awuni, who worked tirelessly to find them all, was ecstatic to see relatives he hadn’t been with for years, as well as meet new family members. He closed the gathering with prayer thanking the Lord for “this auspicious day to share the Rouson legacy—a legacy of family, service, and support for others.”

The Rousons are a talented family with members in public service, working with youth, in finance and entrepreneurs, including a legacy of professional artists. Homer Rouson, son of Reverend George Thomas and Luvenia Baker Rouson was an artist. John Hairston, Jr. Kathy Rouson’s son, is a commercial artist and owns All City Studios, where he blends political satire, social commentary and obscure pop-culture references into art. Hairston’s work is on display in various art galleries all over the world.

Jill Awuni, Assistant Professor of Religion, Director of International Affairs and organizer of The Rouson Lecture was thrilled. “What a magical experience to bring family members together for such an inspirational event. We feel deep gratitude to Reverend George Thomas and Luvenia Baker Rouson for being influential trail blazers whose heritage continues to bring family, students and community together.”

A wooden cross framed in nature showing through a wall of windows is the backdrop for Chowan students, playing instruments and singing praises to the God they love. Their audience, some with eyes closed, moving to the music, experiencing the spirit essential to their well being – all worshiping together. Together with faculty, board members, community leaders and administrators, no one is better than another, all equal in the eyes of God, all forming a community grateful for who they are, where they are and the freedom to worship.

Jason Fowler, Interim Minister at 鶹Ƶ preaches of God’s love. “Becoming the Interim Minister at Chowan has been the greatest blessing of my time here. With every service and every student that grows closer to God, I receive another confirmation of His calling for me to serve here at Chowan and give of myself, in order to better showcase Him to our students. As a Professor, I have always valued deepening the relationship between my students and myself, and the opportunity to lead in Ministry has taken that to an even higher level. Not only do I have the privilege of imparting knowledge and sharing truth, I also get a chance to make a real impact on their lives and their souls for the rest of their lives. Having only just begun, leading our students, our campus and our community closer to God is a responsibility I already cherish and an honor for which I will always be grateful.”

Fowler  was asked by his church in Chesapeake to quit his job at Chowan and become their full-time youth minister. He talked this over with his wife and she told him that she knew he wanted to work in this way for the Lord, but maybe this wasn’t his audience, or God’s plan for him. A week later, Dr. Thomas asked him to be part of the J team (J Brabban, Jill Awuni and Jason) and minister with Chowan’s students. He knew this is where God wanted him.

J Brabban is our Community Outreach Liaison. J’s role revolves around staying in communication with local churches and associations, to let them know Chowan is open to partnership and ready to build up our community alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ.

“I am excited about how 鶹Ƶ now states in its requirements that spiritual growth is an essential life skill. Encouraging our students to become more active in developing spiritual growth is a worthy goal, one we have always had, but now is explicitly stated.”

Dr. Jill Awuni (one of the J’s of the J Team) works with Chowan Christian Service Association as the connection to maintain and grow relationships with our students and local churches and ensure our students remain connected to the local community.

Jason Fowler, J Brabban and Jill Awuni clearly have one more J on their team. Jesus is at the helm, clearly leading the 鶹Ƶ community in love. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another”(John 13:34-35)

The 2024 annual Rouson Memorial lecture, held in the Chowan Chapel, was a wonderful celebration of individuals in the local communities serving as beacons of success and pioneers of their communities. The lecture made possible in collaboration with the Murfreesboro Historical Association, showcased the remarkable achievements and contributions of three outstanding individuals. It is a testament to the power of community collaboration and the unwavering commitment to education and service.

Highlighting the morning were two prestigious awards presented to exceptional individuals who have made a significant impact in their respective fields. The Futrell/Ruffin Community Service Award, a recognition of extraordinary dedication to the community, was bestowed upon Emma P. Peoples. As a Chowan Graduate and the first African American Student to attend the university, Peoples’ groundbreaking achievements were previously acknowledged in November 2023.

Another remarkable recipient was Orlanda G. Reed, who received the Minnie Wood Perkins Humanitarian Award. Reed, a resident of Hertford County, has dedicated her life to serving God and her community, traveling the world to minister in Africa and embodying the true spirit of humanitarianism.

Reverend Pamela G. Taylor, a Chowan Alumni, delivered an inspiring lecture that captivated the audience. Her words of love, encouragement, hope, and prosperity for the university resonated deeply with all attendees, leaving a lasting impression.

In her lecture, entitled “You Can, and I want You To”, Talor called for those in attendance to go back to the roots of loving and supporting each other in times of struggle. She spoke briefly about her own academic journey, encouraging other students to see her success and reflect on what has brought them this far when others have doubted their accomplishments. The words she shared were an inspiration to those looking for reassurance – and the authenticity and warmth to which they were delivered made them all the more powerful.

The success of the event was made possible by the generous contributions of the dedicated family and friends who have donated to the Rouson Memorial Scholarship. Their support ensures that deserving students have the opportunity to pursue their educational dreams at 鶹Ƶ.

The 鶹Ƶ campus gathered on Monday, December 4th, to celebrate the first Advent Service in the newly constructed Chowan Chapel. Led by Reverend Mari Wiles, the students and faculty came together to present an enchanting advent pageant, recounting the timeless story of the three wise men visiting the Baby Jesus.

The service featured a captivating performance by Jeannette Ahmes, who portrayed the angel “Gabriella”. Ahmes met each of the wise men, played by Taylor Furlough, Gregory Wright, and Patrick Krack, before they presented their gifts to the Christ Child. In a remarkable twist, each of the gifts – gold, frankincense, and myrrh – transformed into symbolic representations of the tools Jesus would require to lead a nation to salvation.

The advent service served as a poignant reminder that sometimes the gift we offer may not be the gift that is truly needed. Through this creative interpretation of the birth of Jesus, the 鶹Ƶ community was encouraged to reflect on the importance of discerning the true needs of others and responding accordingly.

The Chowan Chapel, a magnificent addition to the campus, provided a fitting backdrop for this momentous occasion. Its elegant architecture and serene atmosphere created a sacred space for worship and reflection. The advent service marked the beginning of a new chapter in the spiritual life of 鶹Ƶ, as the chapel will continue to serve as a place of worship, contemplation, and community for years to come.

鶹Ƶ extends its gratitude to Reverend Mari Wiles, the talented cast, and all those involved in making this inaugural advent service a resounding success. The university looks forward to future events and services in the Chowan Chapel, as it continues to foster a spirit of faith, unity, and enlightenment within the campus community.

On Sunday, November 6th, 2023, the 鶹Ƶ community gathered in the Chowan Chapel to witness the dedication of the Briley-Weaver Steinway piano. The grand event featured a captivating concert by renowned pianist Maja Rajkoviċ, accompanied by the talented Dennis Krasnokutsy on the viola.

The Briley-Weaver Steinway piano, a magnificent instrument of unparalleled beauty and craftsmanship from Hopper Piano and Organ Company in Raleigh, arrived at the chapel just days before its grand opening in September. Since then, it has become a cherished focal point of the sanctuary, enhancing the spiritual ambiance and enriching the musical experience for all who enter. Linda, along with friends of Chowan Jane Newsome, James Moore, John Tayloe and Keith Pendergraft, had traveled to the Steinway factory in New York to ensure that the piano for the chapel would encapsulate the modern setting of the sanctuary with timeless beauty.  鶹Ƶ’s own Dr. Mary Hellmann led the selection process at the Steinway showroom.

The audience was treated to an awe-inspiring performance by Maja Rajkoviċ, a world-renowned pianist known for her virtuosity and emotive interpretations. Her captivating melodies, skillfully accompanied by Dennis Krasnokutsy’s soulful viola, resonated throughout the chapel, leaving the audience spellbound. They presented a program, Spiritual Images, to highlight the beauty of this instrument, and to reflect on its place in this Chapel and the role that God plays in our lives.

Linda Briley Weaver, a devoted Trustee for over 20 years, has played a pivotal role in shaping the lives of countless students through her dedication to Chowan. Her parents, James and Nell Briley, were both pillars of the community, with James being a Board of Trustee member dedicated to maintaining Christian values. Following her father’s passing, Linda took his place as a Board of Trustee member to follow suit in service to the university. As the chair of the Student Affairs Committee and a member of the Executive Committee, Linda’s commitment to Chowan is unwavering. Additionally, she serves as the chair of the Friends of Teacher Education Board of Directors.

Beyond her involvement with Chowan, Linda’s heart for her community is evident. She actively contributes to the greater Henderson area through her membership at First Baptist Church Henderson, where she serves on various committees and has served as a Deacon. Linda has also been a dedicated member of the Board of ACTS since 1995, a member of the Women’s League of Henderson, and a volunteer with the American Red Cross.

The dedication of the Briley-Weaver Steinway piano marks a significant milestone for 鶹Ƶ. This extraordinary instrument will serve as a source of inspiration and a catalyst for artistic excellence for generations to come. Its presence in the Chowan Chapel is a testament to the university’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and enriching environment for both spiritual and musical growth.

Linda’s late husband, John Weaver, shared her belief in the power of community and education. Together, their families have left an indelible mark on their community, and this symbol of community and Christianity will keep a song in the hearts of many for decades to come.

In a poignant ceremony that echoed with faith, unity, and gratitude, 鶹Ƶ celebrated the inauguration of the Chowan Chapel on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. This momentous event, known as the “Chowan Chapel: Service of Thanksgiving,” marked a significant milestone in the institution’s history.

The Chowan Chapel, situated within the serene confines of 鶹Ƶ’s campus, is far more than a brick-and-mortar structure; it symbolizes a sacred space where a community of believers, united by a shared purpose, can congregate. With its doors now open to all, the Chowan Chapel embarks on a noble mission to serve as a cornerstone in the realms of worship, edification, and evangelism.

In alignment with Christ’s message of love and service, the Chowan Chapel aspires to make a meaningful impact in the world while spreading the message of Christ’s love. It serves as the centerpiece of the university’s faith-based education, reinforcing the institution’s unwavering commitment to being a Christ-centered institution of higher learning.

The opening ceremony featured a rich program, including Dejuan Lee’s soul-stirring piano performance as part of the gathering music. Charles E. Taylor, Jr., President of 鶹Ƶ, extended a warm welcome and shared the purpose behind the gathering.

Kemper W. Baker, Chair of the Board of Trustees, acknowledged the generosity that made the construction of the Chowan Chapel possible. The program continued with heartfelt invocations and readings, including those by Bucky Glover, Duke Askew, Linda B. Weaver, Rev. Mari E. Wiles, Jane Newsome, Rev. Pam Taylor, Brayden Conboy, Anthony M. Rawlings, Sr., and Charles Pond.

Trustee and alumnus Bucky Glover ‘74 delivered an extremely personal invocation that offered extended gratitude to donors, architects, and the extended Chowan family.

A special musical anthem, “I Am The Way,” was prepared and performed especially for this service and was presented by The Chowan Choir, captivating all in attendance. The sermon, a powerful and inspirational message focusing on ‘Faith in your Future,’ was delivered by alumnus and trustee Anthony Rawlings, Sr ‘11.

The event concluded with a heartfelt benediction by Charles B. Pond, III, a devoted trustee of 鶹Ƶ. Following the service, a delightful dinner on the grounds was held, reminiscent of the homecoming Baptist dinners often cherished at regional congregations.

With the Chowan Chapel now open and serving as a spiritual and communal hub for all, it stands as a testament to 鶹Ƶ’s dedication to nurturing the spiritual and intellectual growth of its students and the broader community.

When it came to designing the Chowan Chapel, the university sought to create a structure that seamlessly blended with the existing architectural landscape while paying homage to the local and regional church buildings. Toni Finch, Principal of Little BIRD Architecture, PLLC, was entrusted with this formidable task.

Finch’s vision was clear: to design a chapel that would not only stand as a symbol of faith but also evoke a sense of nostalgia reminiscent of the region’s historic church buildings. She carefully studied the local architectural vernacular, considering the shapes, materials, and aesthetics that define the area’s beloved churches.

The result is a chapel that exudes charm and timelessness. With its graceful lines, a soaring steeple, and a warm color palette, the Chowan Chapel harmoniously fits within the campus’s architectural context while carrying the spirit of traditional North Carolinian churches.

Turning architectural blueprints into a tangible structure requires the skill and dedication of seasoned professionals. Monteith Construction, headquartered in Wilmington, NC, proved to be the perfect choice to bring Finch’s design to life.

As the general contractor for the Chowan Chapel, Monteith Construction displayed exceptional craftsmanship, attention to detail, and a deep appreciation for the project’s significance. They skillfully executed the construction, ensuring that every element of the chapel was meticulously crafted to reflect the architect’s vision and the university’s values.
