Â鶹ÊÓƵ Honors Service and Sacrifice at Seventh Annual Military and First Responders Game

Oct 30, 2025 by Corrie Warren

MURFREESBORO, N.C. —October 30, 2025— Â鶹ÊÓƵ proudly hosted its Seventh Annual Military and First Responders Game on Saturday evening at Garrison Stadium, welcoming service members, veterans, and first responders from across the region for a night of recognition, gratitude, and community pride.

The annual event—one of Chowan’s most meaningful campus traditions—honors those who dedicate their lives to protecting others, both at home and abroad. This year’s observance, held in conjunction with Chowan’s home football game against UNC Pembroke, blended spirited athletic competition with heartfelt appreciation for those who serve.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ President Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas joined guests and participants on the field during pregame and halftime ceremonies, greeting honorees and their families and personally thanking local first responders and military veterans in attendance. Her presence underscored the University’s continued commitment to service, leadership, and community partnership.

The evening began with a stirring presentation of colors by the Hertford County High School JROTC, under the direction of Chief Warrant Officer and Sergeant K. Brown. Lieutenant Investigator Clifton Whitby of the Hertford County Sheriff’s Department, a U.S. Army National Guard veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, offered the pregame prayer. The national anthem was performed by Chowan student Daryl Swinson, a music production major and member of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Jazz Band and Chorus.

During pregame ceremonies, the University recognized three honorary captains, each representing a distinct legacy of service and sacrifice:

  • Chad Drake, a Chowan alumnus, U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and two-time Bronze Star recipient whose 24-year career included service at Camp David and deployments in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
  • Officer Tim Wadsworth, a Master Officer with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission whose 26-year law enforcement career includes multiple statewide and national awards for excellence and instruction.
  • Michael Zhe, a U.S. Army National Guard veteran who completed two combat tours in the Middle East and earned the Groton Army Achievement Medal for his service in Afghanistan.

At halftime, local heroes and community servants were recognized for their continued dedication to safety and service, reflecting the University’s ongoing commitment to faith-based leadership and civic engagement.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ extends its sincere gratitude to all members of the military, veterans, first responders, and their families for their selfless service to the nation and local communities.
