Films@Chowan Screens Union Pacific

Oct 31, 2014 by Staff Reports

Â鶹ÊÓƵ will offer its second “Films @ Chowan” seminar on Saturday, November 15th at 10:00 am in Vaughan Auditorium, located on the ground floor of Marks Hall on the Chowan campus. A new offering to the public this fall from Chowan, the series considers films from 1939 in their 75th anniversary.

For this session of “Old Films, New Ideas,” the film selected is Union Pacific. Directed by Cecil B. DeMille (who was originally from Washington, NC) and starring Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea, Union Pacific is about the building of the first transcontinental railroad.

Following a screening of the film, participants will engage in a discussion of the new ideas the old film has generated. Facilitating the discussion will be members of the University/Community Committee: Dr. John Davis, Professor of English, who teaches Chowan’s Appreciation of Film course; Dr. Greg Taylor, Associate Professor of History; Georgia Williams, Head of Whitaker Library; Kerri Albertson, Director of Chowan’s Writing Center; Curtis Loftis, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design; and Hugh Davis, English instructor at C.S. Brown High School and community representative.

Prior to the screening of the film, there will be a brief introduction to Films of 1939 and their legacy and a brief overview of the historical events depicted in the film.

The series is free of charge and open to the public. Additionally, educators may receive CEU credit.

For more information or to register in advance, contact Nancy Cox at 398-6211 orcoxn@chowan.edu. Participants may also register in the lobby of Marks Hall just prior to the 10:00 beginning.
